Rolled Rim Terra Cotta Pots

Our Seibert & Rice Rolled Rim Planters are made completely free hand, without the assistance of molds, by one of the oldest and most traditional workshops in Impruneta, Italy. Each pot is built using the ''coil method'', whereby the potter rolls out a coil of clay and, walking around in a circle, carefully and skillfully builds up the walls of the pot a few inches each day.

The process is highly time consuming and requires an extraordinary amount of skill that only a very few artisans possess. The result is a distinctively handmade-looking planter that is truly a piece of sculpture. You can feel the difference when your fingers fit snugly underneath the curve of the rim.

Rolled Rim Planters 20'' and smaller have one band.

Heirloom Quality Terra Cotta
Impruneta, Italy has always been the source of the finest terra cotta in the world. For hundreds of years, artisans have produced the most spectacular terra cotta in the world. It has the high relief, exquisite detail, and top quality craftsmanship that can only be found in work executed by the hand of an accomplished artisan.

There is no confusing this pottery with that pressed out by machine or hastily done by less skilled laborers. Seibert & Rice terra cotta is heirloom quality terra cotta that increases in value over time. These are the pots that show up at auction houses at appreciated prices or they are passed on to children and grandchildren.

Frost Proof
Seibert & Rice terracotta is frost proof. The unique chemical composition of the soil in Impruneta, which is high in iron and other chemicals, combined with the long and high firing process used there, makes this the most durable terra cotta in the world. While other products that claim to be frost proof may last a couple of winters, only genuine Impruneta terra cotta lasts for generations.

Care of Pots
Seibert & Rice pots require very little maintenance and should last for generations. They can be left outdoors year-round full of soil if you follow a few simple instructions.

It is essential that your pots have good drainage. Pots must be elevated an inch or so off the ground. You can use our Pot Wedges or simply place pieces of wood or bricks under the pots. Make sure the drainage holes do not become blocked. It is advisable to place an arched piece of broken terra cotta over the hole before filling the pot.

Also, make sure your soil is not too compact and that the water can run out. It is better to leave soil in the pots than to leave the pots empty.
