Aluminum Patio Furniture
Before the advent of aluminum patio furniture any outdoor room furniture made of aluminum was pretty much relegated to the kitchen and dining room. According to Ellen S. Wilson's article "Aluminum by Design: Jewelry to Jets" in Carnegie Magazine, the use of aluminum products first became popular in the kitchen. It wasn't long before the growing popularity of aluminum products would prompt designers to start making aluminum outdoor living furniture. Aluminum furniture designed by Alcoa, the first aluminum smelter in America, resembled old furniture forms such as wood. Aluminum legs were made to look like turned wood legs and were even painted to resemble wood grain. As consumers began to embrace the modernist look of aluminum furniture it took on its own look. In the 70's and 80's plastic outdoor living furniture became the rage replacing aluminum outdoor furniture. Recently however, consumers have once again embraced the durability and lightweight practicality of aluminum patio furniture and designers are responding with furniture that is both sophisticated and modern.
